Word Painting: The Power of Vivid Description

Presented by Amber Lea Starfire

We all know good description when we read it — a writer so skillfully paints a portrait of a character, a place, or a situation that we find ourselves immersed in the story. The real world fades away as, in our imaginations, we smell the oiled leather of our protagonist’s saddle and feel his thirst as he licks his cracked, parched lips; we see the desert stretched before us, watch heat waves rise in bright undulations from amber sands; we hear the soft plod of the horse’s hooves as they sink into the sand; and we root for our hero to find that water hole we know must be there if he is to survive.

Time — 9:00 a.m. – 12:00 p.m.

Location — Synergy Medical Fitness Center, 3421 Villa Lane, Napa, CA 94558

Please see the EVENTS tab on this website for all the details.

Next General Meeting, November 9th, 2016

7-9 PM

Come out and join in the fun with Napa Valley Writers on Wednesday, Nov. Nov. 9 as we present our first annual Writers Support Roundtable. Just twenty-four hours after the polls have closed, we’ll spend the evening talking about absolutely nothing to do with the elections!
Three groups facilitated by a few of NVW’s favorite people will answer questions all writers face at some time or other.
1. How to Become Your Own Publisher and Retain Control of Your Writing Project (Patsy Ann Taylor and Marilyn Campbell). 2. Five ways to Know Your Critique Group is Right for You (Kathleen Thomas). 3. Social Media: Grow Your Audience and Get Noticed (Kymberlie Ingalls and Sarita Lopez).
NVW member reader Patsy Ann Taylor will read “Don’t Get Me Wrong,” a winner in the recent Lucky Shorts competition.
Napa Valley Writers, a branch of the California Writers Club, holds monthly meetings. For all details see napavalleywriters.net, or contact publicity_nvw@outlook.com. Always open to the public.
